Descendants of William Hudson and Mary Jane Goddard
William Hudson age 45 years married Mary Jane Goddard age 20 years on 4 September 1873, at Skelgill Farm, Ullina (near Smeaton, Victoria). Their daughter Isabella, named for William Hudson's mother Isabella Green/Hudson, was born on 25 May the following year. Isabella was followed in rapid succession by a another sixteen children. The last child Charles was born on 22 January 1896, when William Hudson was 68 and Mary Jane Goddard was 42. Only three of the children died as infants, and most of the remainder went on to marry and have children and grandchildren of their own. The descendants of William Hudson and Mary Jane Goddard number at least 727, and could be approaching one thousand. They have spread to all states of Australia and to other countries.

A Bountiful Harvest
William Hudson and Mary Jane Goddard ran a mixed farming operation on their small property "Sunny Brow", where much of the farm produce would have been directed to meeting the growing needs of a rapidly expanding family. Thus, dairy cows, pigs, and poultry were important contributors to the family table, as were the vegetable garden and orchard. The sale of pigs, and milk, and the value-added production of farm-house hams would have provided a source of income. For regular and sustained productivity, however, the almost annual birth of another family member would have to be ranked as one of their most outstanding achievements. Seventeen children were born to the couple between their wedding on 4 September 1873 and the birth of their last child Charles on 22 January 1896.
Naming the Children
The "given names" of relatives from previous generations are usually a valuable resource for parents faced with deciding the names for their own offspring. William Hudson and Mary Jane Goddard had the following selection to draw upon, and it is clear that the names of many of their children were derived from their grandparents, aunts and uncles, particularly those (until the supply ran out) from the Hudson family in Longsleddale, Westmorland.
